Fearing What We THINK We Know…

So, I stumbled across this quote today…

It had me pondering and then unpacking it…

IF we fear what we think we know about the unknown, then isn’t it the “reality” or the “narrative” that we are creating in our own minds that is generating the fear?

Should we then, avoid creating those realities and narratives by remaining focused on the present?

I thought I give it a try for myself. Having been told that I have a tendency toward being a worrier.

When my thoughts began to take me down a rabbit hole of fearing what I THINK I know about the unknown, I would catch myself and re-focus on the here and now.

It seemed to work. I was able to re-centre myself and the anxiety and fear that was building dissipated.

So here is how I did it.

First, recognize you are having these thoughts in the first place…Observe them, but don’t judge yourself for having them…

Second, shift those thoughts by focusing on who or what is in front of you. This is where PRACTICE becomes important. It may take several attempts shifting from fearful thoughts to the present moment but keep at it.

What you are doing is forming a new mental habit. 😊

For example, maybe you are having a cup of coffee when your mind wanders this down this fearful path? Once you recognize it, bring your thoughts back to savouring the coffee — the smell, the taste etc.

Or maybe you are driving down the road and you begin to have a cascade of fearful thoughts then shift your focus to the landscape you are driving through. Place yourself in a state of wonder through your ability to observe the present moment.

Have a crack at it! 😊

You got this!

Until next time, many blessings and much peace 💕
